Reading Thomas Jefferson reminds us that the people must exercise sufficient control over government. Otherwise they will be oppressed by it. And this influence over government must be shared among all the people. As long as every individual participates, the government will be safe. The greater the participation, the safer government will be.
We deeply believe in this basic American principle, but not everyone in America does. There are those, including too many in our own government, who don’t respect or trust the people enough to allow them to participate. Elites don’t believe the people are capable of self-government, and point to videos like this to make their case:
But the answer is not to shut the people out of government. The solution lies in this quote by Thomas Jefferson:
I know no safe depositary of the ultimate powers of the society but the people themselves; and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise their control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them, but to inform their discretion by education. This is the true corrective of abuses of constitutional power.
And let’s hear from George Washington on the importance of education and knowledge:
Knowledge is in every country the surest basis of public happiness… A primary object… should be the education of our youth in the science of government. In a republic, what species of knowledge can be equally important? And what duty more pressing… than… communicating it to those who are to be the future guardians of the liberties of the country?
And other Founding Fathers:
Knowledge is the key to good government, so education in basic principles and philosophies, in the American form of government as compared to competing forms, in a history of violations of basic principles and the consequences of such, becomes a vital function. So this is one of the things FREE & INDEPENDENT™ will do. This is why we’re building an Education Center and developing courses for individual Americans to complete.
