This is America, and America is Freedom

in Opinion, This is America

This is America, and we must never forget what that means. This country is special, and to keep the American spirit alive and strong, each of us must always remember what America is and what she represents to the world and humankind. In the introduction to Volume I of his two-volume book, America: The Last Best Hope, William J. Bennett wrote:

When President Lincoln wrote to Congress in December 1862, shortly after he issued the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, he wrote, “We shall nobly save or meanly lose this last best hope of earth.” For nearly a century before that message — and easily for a century afterward — Americans would not have doubted that this country was indeed the last best hope. In a speech scheduled for delivery in Dallas on 22 November 1963, President John F. Kennedy’s text read, “We in this country are the watchmen on the walls of world freedom.” Kennedy’s view was Lincoln’s before him and Jefferson’s before Lincoln. Later, it was Reagan’s. Democrat, Republican, Federalist, Antifederalist… it hardly mattered. An abiding sense of American greatness, of American purpose, of American exceptionalism has long characterized many of our leaders and tens of millions of the rest of us as well. We have long had hope.

But events of the last several decades have caused too many people to have lost this hope. Far too many of us have become cynical and apathetic. Many have even forgotten or given up on the original idea and dream of America. This is dangerous to the future of our country. As President Ronald Reagan put it in his Farewell Address:

If we forget what we did, we won’t know who we are. I’m warning of an eradication of the American memory that could result, ultimately, in an erosion of the American spirit.

Worse, this opens the door to what we see happening today — there are those in government who are working to fundamentally change this great country. Well, if they succeed, the earth will have lost its last best hope for freedom.

We cannot let them succeed. Returning again to Ronald Reagan:

We’ve got to do a better job of getting across that America is freedom — freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of enterprise. And freedom is special and rare. It’s fragile; it needs [protection].

And then read some quotes from our Founding Fathers:
